So youāre thinking about buying a sapphire ring, perhaps for your engagement? But you want to know: Will sapphire scratch? Will it be durable for everyday wear?
How hard is it to scratch a sapphire?
Not only are sapphire a beautiful stone to showcase in a ring, but they are also very durable. Sapphires are comprised of the mineral corundum ā Aluminium Oxide. Sapphire is very hard and is classed as 9 on the Mohs scale and is therefore one of the hardest gemstones known to man, second only to the diamond. For that reason, sapphires are commonly used for everyday jewelry, as they are sturdy and less prone to scratching than other precious gems such as beryl (aquamarine, morganite), garnet or topaz.
Can you scratch a sapphire ring?
It should be noted that sapphires, like any gem (including diamond) are not immune to scratches, however you will get many years of daily wear out of any sapphire.
Due to the hardness of sapphire, it is often used on the manufacture of electronic gadgets, watches, other components and scratch resistant material. But of course the best use for beautiful sapphires is to wear them in a ring, or pendant.
After many years you may notice your sapphire may begin to incur a few marks and scratches. The good news is that you can easily have these marks removed by a gem polisher at relatively low cost.
If your purchase a sapphire ring, you should have full confidence that you can wear it each and every day without too much risk of the sapphire scratching.
